PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Dear Parents and/or Guardians,
To the parents and community members who became involved in the Eastern Kings Schools Review process in any way, thank you for taking the time to help shape the future of education for our students for years to come. The Annapolis Valley Regional School Board will be better prepared to make decisions because of the input you have provided.
Congratulations are extended to all of our students who recently took part in our Subject/Science Fair. We had over 70 science projects exhibited this year (over 100 in total), and so it was no easy task for our judges to select the students who will now move on to the Regional Science Fair. We are pleased to announce that Jane Ponikvar, Sydney Cummins, Josh Cummins, Abbey Robertson, Becky Balcom, Isabelle Callaghan, Jennifer Kerr, Julia Dunn, Roman Koszucki and Iain Thomas will be going on to the Regionals.
Special thanks to our volunteer judges, committed parents/guardians and dedicated staff for supporting our students in their endeavours.
As a result of our last in-service, our school has selected Writing, Meeting the Needs of All Learners and Bullying as our primary focus over the next 3 years. The next inservice will be used to begin writing goals, strategies and action plans to further our work in the three areas. Thanks to teachers and co-chairs Jana Logue-Arbou and Kathleen Barclay and to parent SAC rep Janet Roberts.
School Boards in the province were considering changes to the calendar to allow for a 2 week break in February during the Canada Games in Halifax. The number of actual school days would not have changed, only the dates. After gathering information from school communities the decision is the 2010-2011 School Year will remain the same!
CLASS CONFIGRUATION for 2010/11 School Year
Parents, families and students may provide the school with important information that would be useful in developing class lists (this must be done in writing to the school administration). Deadline to submit this information is May 7, 2010 to ensure that your input is considered.

ATTENDANCE AND LATE ARRIVALS
As mentioned in the last newsletter, attendance and late arrivals for a growing number of our students is still a big concern for staff as students miss valuable information and latecomers disrupt work that is already under way. Our school day starts promptly at 8:40 am, later than many other schools in our area. We expect to have your child here at that time each day. Our school statistics show that we have an average of 30+ students on a regular basis who are absent or late in the mornings. When students are going to be absent from school, we appreciate a phone call to our school office and late students must sign in at each office as we need to know exactly who is in the building at all times for fire/safety reasons. Our safe arrival program in the elementary school has us calling many families each day when students are absent or late. We would like to remind families that school continues with valuable learning even on ½ days and early dismissals - we expect all students to be here on those days as well. Students who miss school time in the early years may develop bad habits, miss critical skills and generally may not do as well in later years. In the upper grades, students miss valuable skills and content which is being covered and it becomes difficult to keep up with their classes. Your attention to this is greatly appreciated!!!
HEAD FOR A CURE
Wolfville Junior High is gearing up for its fifth year of raising funds to support the Canadian Cancer Society’s Head for A Cure. On Thursday, March 11th, 2010 a number of our Wolfville Junior high students will be shaving or cutting their hair. These students will also be raising money through pledges from family, friends and neighbours as well as participating in group fundraisers in preparation for the event. In addition, Mr. Keddy has agreed to shave off his beard on March 11th, if the school population raises $1000.00. Anyone interested in making a donation, please bring it to the Junior High office. Tax receipts are available for donations over $10.00. Everyone is welcome to attend the ‘shave’ morning of March 11th. Any inquiries can be directed to Caroline Burton, Meredith Moore or Taunya Sheffield at Wolfville School.

The money raised will go toward mobility equipment, education and services to families who need them. The elementary will be doing some hopping activities in the morning in support of this worthwhile cause. We are not asking kids to go door to door for donations. Students are welcome to bring any donations of change to support this cause on April 9th. There will be more reminders as the event draws closer. Thanks for your support. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the elementary office or Mr. Paul Veinotte, Guidance Counsellor.
